Summary: Seditious spirit charges are
addressed by the council today.
Journal entry: Monday Jan 24th 1848.
Today the Council met at ten a.m. on Woolley's case. We had a long
session which lasted nearly all day. The case had created much excitement
& the house was crowded. The charge was fully and abundantly sustained.
President Harris decided that he should be fined one hundred dollars
which was followed by a general pause in which President Young proposed
to me to withdraw the charge which I did after a long speech on
the object and duty of a police & the reasons for bringing it up;
&c Presidents Young & Kimball also spoke on the subject.
This trial was the cause of much good as the people were enlightened
on the object & intention of a police. The dark cloud of dissatisfied
and murmuring feeling was for the time being dispelled.
