Hosea Stout Journals

January 13, 1848

Location: Winter Quarters - 1014 miles left, Nebraska - Location: 41:21:41N 95:56:45W Currently the site of Florence, Nebraska, Winter Quarters was settled in September, 1846 as a temporary resting place for the pioneers. It is located just west of the Missouri river in Nebraska.

Summary: Mr.Long returns; soldiers in search of a deserter.

Journal entry: Thurs. Jan. 13th 1848. Today Mr Long who had ran away with Calkins daughter returned accompanied by 4 soldiers they were in search of one Saml Smith a deserter.

He came to me and wanted the help of the police saying they would give any price.

Smith had been here & crossed to the East side of the river just before they came. We watched for him till midnight. They agreed to employ 4 of us to go tomorrow to go in search of him with 4 of them for they were afraid to go with us only in case there was as many of them for what reason I know not.
