of Florence, Nebraska, Winter Quarters was settled in September,
1846 as a temporary resting place for the pioneers. It is located
just west of the Missouri river in Nebraska.
Summary: Saturday. First day of the journey.
Journal entry: Bade farewell to many
who seem dearer to me than life & seated in the carriage with sis.
P. [Pierce] M. [Margaret] & E. [Edith Evaline] I took my departure
from Winter Quarters. It commenc'd raining soon after our start--one
of br. P.s drivers had the misfortune to break his wagon tongue
which was soon repaired--we travel'd 7 ms. the weather became fine
& we encamp'd at night having 14 wagons in com. I felt a loneliness
for a while after parting with my friends but the spirit of consolation
& rejoicing return'd & I journey'd with good cheer.
