Hosea Stout Journals

February 5, 1848

Summary: Council settles dispute over whiskey ownership. Whiskey laws are sustained.

Journal entry: Sat Feb. 5th 1848. Around as usual. At one o'clock went to Council. John Pack had prefered a charge against Bp Carns for taking his whiskey, which after much ado and argument, was laid aside as he had went according to law. I here spoke in favor of sustaining the law and bore down on those who sold spiriteous liquors very hard. In the evening I & several of the police met at E. Gardners with H. S. Eldredge to settle or rather explain to him the reason that the police did not want him for a Collector, which was done I believe to the satisfaction of all parties. I came home about Eleven O'Clock P. M.
