Pioneer Student Work Pioneer: Wilford Woodruff (Chris - 4th Grade)

Image courtesy of: Heritage Gateway Project Images, These images have been gathered to support the Sesquicentennial celebration of the immigration to Utah. My pioneer hero is an ancestor, Wilford Woodruff, born in 1807 at Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was a member of the first Mormon Pioneer company that arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in July, 1847. In the mid and late 19th century, he worked hard to support his family on his farm in Salt Lake City. He was an expert in horticulture and helped many other people successfully grow fruits and vegetables in this desert climate. He was a very smart man who liked to experiment with plants. He was one of Utah's first scientists. In 1889, at the age of 83, he became a Mormon Church president, and accomplished many things for people in the state of Utah. He helped Utah become a state. He was a true pioneer, showing courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. |
