Pioneer: William Henry Ashley (Dixie - 4th Grade)
William Ashley was the head of the fur trading company. In looking for the best place to trap beaver for pelts, his men crossed the Rocky Mountains and explored much of the west. Many famous mountain men were in that group. They kept a diary which helped others who came west later. I admire his pioneer qualities of adventure, courage, and sacrifice.
